Chrono Crusade Vol 1

Fri Aug 19, 2005, 3:13 AM
Konichiwa! welcome to my second review i got round to. So i finally decided that i would go to hmv and see if as everyone says they actually have a decent anime selection for dvd, it turns out they don't, most of it is the same commercial blah you'll find anywhere (dragonball Z, gundam wing, escaflowne etc..) or its just horrendous fan service (battle vixens, mahoromatic and all that crap), but after looking through all the crap, i found tucked away behind the 8billionth evangelion dvd, Chrono Crusade, it looked interesson so i picked it up and got it. But before i start the review, 4 episodes only on a whole dvd?! come on japanese imports which are cheaper have min of 6 and up to 10 on a disc! Anyways here is the review...

Overview: Chrono crusade, is set in America in the late 1920's, its like a time of great prosperity or something, its actually set in 1928, the year before the depression so ya know. CC follows Rosette, a "sister" from the magdalene order, a religious order who are trained to fight devils, demons and all things monstrous. But accompanying her on her good deeds, is chrono a demon contractor! but he is an ally to her, blah blah blah will not give away anymore plot. It basically jumps from wicked monster killing, humour, plot, killing and continues that cycle, but hey nothing wrong with that.

Lifespan: 7/10: The first volume only has the first 4 eps on it, and i think there are around 5 or 6 volumes so its not a bad length for an anime series, but then again you have to shell out for each dvd, so it will be expensive to get the whole series.

Drawing: 10/10: The drawing fits the period perfectly, all very 20's. It is traditional however in style, not crazily stylised or anything, but i love it, couldn't be any better, from the grizzly industrial buildings, to the old school ford automobiles, it all fits itself and gives you that golden 20's vibe.

Music: 9/10: Its all wicked, the opening theme is a very upbeat J-pop/rock styled track, and the ending theme is more calmed however, the only reaon it misses out on a 10 is some of the filler tracks get cut off slightly too suddenly, which does feel a little awkward when using headphones, but not so bad if on speakers, but these are only very occasional so it doesn't matter.

Plot: 8/10: The plot is enough to keep you riveted all though doesn't get too complicated in the first four episodes, i assume it will unravel as volume whizzes around in my dvd player. But there are some very interesting parts to it, i won't give anything away, watch it and find out.

Overall: 34/40: To class, a little less complicated than what i'm used to but hey nothing wrong with that, it still kicks ass and i'll be buying volume 2 as soon as i have the money.

Gomen, i have to go now, sayonara!
